Abraham Lincoln School was abuzz with excitement as students showcased their linguistic prowess in the annual Spelling Bee Contest. The event, held on February 6th, drew participants from 10 diverse backgrounds, each eager to demonstrate their mastery of the English language. And Our school, Colegio del Bosque Bilingüe is proud to claim that students from 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4rd and 5th grade were participating in this important event. However, beyond the competition itself, the Spelling Bee holds significant importance in the journey of students learning a second language.
Learning a second language is a multifaceted endeavor that extends beyond mere vocabulary acquisition. It involves developing a deep understanding of grammar rules, syntax, and nuanced meanings of words. The Spelling Bee Contest serves as a platform for students to apply and refine these skills in a practical setting.
For students learning English as a second language, the Spelling Bee offers a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the language. It challenges them to expand their vocabulary, improve pronunciation, and enhance their overall communication abilities. Moreover, participating in such competitions fosters confidence and a sense of achievement among students as they navigate a new linguistic terrain.
In addition to linguistic benefits, the Spelling Bee promotes essential life skills such as perseverance, focus, and resilience. The rigorous preparation required for the competition instills discipline and a strong work ethic in students. It teaches them the value of diligence and dedication in pursuit of their goals.
Furthermore, the Spelling Bee cultivates a sense of camaraderie and community among students. Regardless of their proficiency level, participants come together to celebrate language and learning. They support and encourage each other, fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual respect.
On the other hand, students had the opportunity to learn about a new school with different spaces and a bilingual context. We were hosted by Abraham Lincoln students of 5 grade who showed us the school and welcomed us, took after us, and even gave us some snacks.
Our students were amazed by their hospitality and kindness. This was also a wonderful opportunity for our students to expand their social abilities with English as a bridge of communication.
