The house system is a traditional feature of schools in the English-speaking world, particularly in England. The school is divided into subunits called 'houses' and each student is allocated to one house at the moment of enrollment. Houses may compete with one another at sports and maybe in other ways, thus providing a focus for group loyalty.

The Romans used it to make the torches with which they illuminated the path of the bride to the house of the husband, as a symbol of happiness, as it was considered the instrument of positive cosmic influence for the new couple. Likewise, in ancient Rome, birch branches were used in the ritual to expel the spirits of the old year. Its main virtue is to drive sorrows out and improve depressions.
